Just puttin’ that out there... But cheaper than an Explorer...

Weird illusion of reverse rake. I remember the old days of E150s with helper springs looking lifted in the rear.

could be worse

Yep.

I think these look pretty okay tbh

you what

They drive pretty nice, especially for how big they
are. Pretty good pick up and easy to park.

Smaller sister looks better.
Transit Custom Tourneo

There is nothing wrong with that :o)
At least the entire engine fits under the hood :p
![]() 10/08/2019 at 20:17 |

Bit for what it is. Also we fit 18 bros in one of those in complete comfort

I actually like them while I am not a fan of the Astro! But I do appreciate the Astro

That towing capacity though....

there are some cheaper options if not looking new
![]() 10/08/2019 at 21:19 |

Its a fullsize van. Im sure there are people that said the same thing about your van when it was new.
![]() 10/08/2019 at 21:36 |

I actually kinda like the look of the new Transit - especially in short box.
![]() 10/08/2019 at 23:09 |

I think they look better without windows.

I’ll take an Ecoboost Transit any day of the week. 0-60 in under 7 seconds in a van.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 04:54 |

That’s rather quicker than any Transit I can buy - 2.0 diesel only. Then again if the people who buy these for lo
cal deliveries and as work vehicles wanted any more go I suppose Ford would have supp
lied it.

At least it was designed in this decade, rather than our friends at GM trying to pass off the 92 model year safari as a 2019

Very Euro.

That is an ugly truck, for certain.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 10:54 |

Probably look better from the inside.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 10:55 |

This looks better than that straight profile image, but still pretty scary-looking.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 10:58 |

Looks to be a good deal larger than my Safari.

I’m sure there are people saying that about my v an now that it’s old.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 11:00 |

What appeals to me about the Safari is how utile it is. I can fit a sheet of plywood inside on the floor. I can (rated up to) tow 5,000 pounds. Drives well and has been supremely dependable.

Ironic to me that only oil burners are offered in Europe.

I don’t need acceleration; I need pulling torque and utility.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 11:05 |

What are you talking about?
![]() 10/09/2019 at 11:15 |

That would make a good pope mobile if the pope was blind.

That was very much the case for our 1991 Mazda MPV family truckster growing up. Carried people, carried stuff, rwd, rated to tow 4500lbs (smaller boat at the time) and was a bullet proof, if expensive, example of Japanese bubble era build quality. It was chosen in part because it drove and handled so well (unibody, RWD Mazda 929 platform derivative) .
That said, I’m a fan of the current Ford Transit. We rent cargo vans to haul acquired collections from time-to-time. The transit is by far the best driving of the current full-size vans. Most of the other alternatives feel like driving something from a previous era . There’s also like a thousand different configurations the Transit can be ordered in, so I can’t imagine not being able to spec one out to exactly what you want.

That at least ford tried to modernize the van over the GMC Savanna and Chevy Express, idk why I thought the Savanna was the Safari
Basically GM doesn't update their shit and at least Ford has a modern van, even if it's a bit ugly
![]() 10/09/2019 at 11:21 |

I haven’t checked numbers yet, but what’s the smallest Transit wheelbase that’ll accommodate a sheet of plywood? Do you happen to know offhand?
Also, what’s this about “acquired collection?” Sounds interesting.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 11:51 |
|
Acquired collections are (sometimes many) boxes of donated papers to the archives and special collections department I work for in the university library . I don’t know on the first question, but my guess would be any of them with a row or two of seats removed.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 12:09 |

Fair enough. But lack of modernity can have its advantages in maintainability.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 12:19 |
|
Sure, but that Alone doesn’t make a good product, the Ford is much better for with Space for one, is still just as repairable, and designed Better for the driver.
Modernization is still a key element in any car
![]() 10/09/2019 at 12:25 |

I’m not disagreeing with you, but making my case for an alternative. Driving and maintaining an automobile is a costly proposition. And atop it all is the depreciation.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 12:32 |

I blame Mercedes Benz.
Their commercial van started out OK, but then got ugly.
Then Chrysler spun it off as the commercial RAM van, and it got uglier.
Nissan and Ford tried to compete with it, and they got uglier, also.
Now they all look like shipping containers on wheels with a Halloween mask competition to see which can look scariest from the front.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 12:33 |

Hallowe’en Darth Vader mask... True for too many cars these days. Like the Honda Civic, prime example..

Not really, vans have been diesel-only (or almost so) for decades. Petrol ones wouldn’t make much commercial sense and I
wouldn’t like trying to sell one second hand.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 18:11 |
|
Do I remember correctly that you are in Ireland? Can you tell me what the factors are that cause petrol models not to make sense?
![]() 10/09/2019 at 18:18 |
|
They use about one third more fuel. Fuel’s expensive. Also, diesel is cheaper than petrol.
![]() 10/09/2019 at 18:44 |
|
But particulates... Diesel fuel contains more energy by unit volume than petrol, which can bring about better mileage. Or kilometerage... Is diesel fuel subsidized somehow? In the U.S., diesel is more expensive than gasoline.

Interesting. I want to do van life for 1 month. Renting seems expensive so thinking of buying one, throwing a mattress in the back and selling once I get back.
